Why do our Seasonal Workers love their job?
If you really want to know what it's like to work with the City of Edmonton, the best people to ask are the Seasonal Workers who commit to doing excellent work at different times year round. With much of them feeling like they get paid to play lets hear what they have to say about what they do:
WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO
"I have been with the City of Edmonton for more than two years. Before working here, I was self-employed for 10 years, and felt it was time for a change. In the process of deciding on a new career path, I came across the City of Edmonton website, and after reviewing the information there, I decided to submit an application. My first position with the City was as a Labourer, and I am now a Plow and Sander Operator. I plow snow throughout the winter, and repair paving stones sidewalks in the summer."
—Jason Becher, Labourer/Truck Driver, Transportation Services
"I started with the City three years ago as a Recreation Technician I for the summer playground program, and am now the Childcare Attendant Supervisor for the Kinsmen Sports Center Kids Den. It is our duty to provide efficient services to our patrons: children and their families. The parents and guardians are trusting us to ensure the safety, nurturing and well-being of their children while in our care. The staff works as a cohesive team in order to provide quality childcare."
—Aura Gariepy, Childcare Attendant Supervisor, Community Services
"I've only been with the City since July of 2010, but I already love my work. My responsibilities include assisting the Human Resources Recruitment staff, updating the job board in City Hall, and scanning and attaching candidate documents. I also verify the education documents of our job applicants."
—Qin (Linda) Lu, Staff Support Clerk, Corporate Services
SOME OF THE BEST REASONS TO JOIN US
"I would say that some of the best reasons include the fact that the City offers great capacity for career growth, the organization is creative and we have the opportunity to improve the livability for our citizens."
—Qin (Linda) Lu, Staff Support Clerk, Corporate Services
"The City of Edmonton is an organization with a very diverse workforce that enhances a member's experience and offers a wide range of job opportunities. One can experience as much growth within the organization as one aspires to. The primary factors influencing my decision to accept a position with the City were job security, advancement opportunities, and hours that are beneficial to my home life, as compared to self-employment. The City has shown confidence in me by training me on a variety of equipment, and assisted me in upgrading my license to a Class 3."
—Jason Becher, Labourer/Truck Driver, Transportation Services
"I joined the City because I enjoy working with children. The supervisor made me feel welcome, as did my new co-workers, which appealed to me. I've stayed because the work environment is positive and supportive. It's given me the opportunity and flexibility to grow in my knowledge of childcare, and I really enjoy my work."
—Aura Gariepy, Childcare Attendant Supervisor, Community Services
QUALITIES THAT DEFINE THE CITY AS AN EMPLOYER
"I would describe the Kids Den as being supportive, positive and a growth opportunity. The atmosphere is friendly. I enjoy coming to work and appreciate my co-workers. The other staff—at the Kinsmen Sport Center — are helpful as well. And the Operations staff are very helpful and kind."
—Aura Gariepy, Childcare Attendant Supervisor, Community Services
"Three qualities that I think best define the City (and my department) as an employer are: Empathetic (when an employee requires assistance or time off for personal reasons the City is willing to accommodate); Opportunity for Growth and Advancement (there are postings for a wide variety of positions almost weekly); and Safety-Driven (working safely is of utmost importance). The best way I can describe the culture is like being part of a large sports team. Within a team, everyone has a role that he or she must fulfill to ensure the objectives of the team, or in this case, the organization, are met successfully. My experience as a part of this team has been an enjoyable one, and I look forward to going to work each day."
—Jason Becher, Labourer/Truck Driver, Transportation Services
"The City is creative, has good vision, and has a plan for sustainability."
—Qin (Linda) Lu, Staff Support Clerk, Corporate Services
WHY EDMONTON IS A GREAT PLACE TO WORK
"The people one interacts with on a daily basis generally are patient, understanding, and helpful and are accepting of each individual on a personal level. The City has been very accommodating to my family and me. Recently, I required time off to get married and later assist my wife following the birth of our son. The City very graciously allotted me the time off I required, even though I was still fairly new to the organization, something for which I have been very grateful. I have also been very fortunate to work alongside some very professional people who have imparted their knowledge, wisdom, and most importantly, their friendship upon me. All of which makes the City of Edmonton a great place to work!"
—Jason Becher, Labourer/Truck Driver, Transportation Services
"The City of Edmonton provides a stable work environment. My supervisors acknowledge the hard work and achievements of the staff, which makes me feel more valued and appreciated. They've been very helpful and supportive. And the administration will hold staff barbecues to socialize with others outside of your department."
—Aura Gariepy, Childcare Attendant Supervisor, Community Services
"We have the opportunity to improve ourselves, and at the same time, help to improve the City of Edmonton as an organization, and as a city for our citizens."
—Qin (Linda) Lu, Staff Support Clerk, Corporate Services
THE MOST REWARDING PART OF A CAREER HERE
"The City is a large public-sector organization, and I have the opportunity to learn and provide excellent public service to the public. Growth, advancement potential and leadership are important to me, and the City offers all of them."
—Qin (Linda) Lu, Staff Support Clerk, Corporate Services
"I find most rewarding the fact that I'm contributing to the working of the 'city machine,' if you will, yet I am still able to maintain a stable family life at home, something I was not always able to do when working privately. Using the winter shift as an example, driving a sand/plow truck has been truly the most enjoyable line of work I have performed."
—Jason Becher, Labourer/Truck Driver, Transportation Services
"Iget to work with children every day. I get to watch them grow and develop, while being surrounded by laughter and creativity."
—Aura Gariepy, Childcare Attendant Supervisor, Community Services
