Why Our Labourers & Equipment Operators Enjoy Their Work

Want to know why our Labourers & Equipment Operators continue to enjoy the work they do each day?

Here's what Jason Becher, a Labourer/Truck Driver for our Roadways Section, has to say:

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO

I have been with the City of Edmonton for more than two years. Before working here, I was self-employed for 10 years, and felt it was time for a change. In the process of deciding on a new career path, I came across the City of Edmonton website, and after reviewing the information there, I decided to submit an application. My first position with the City was as a Labourer, and I am now a Plow and Sander Operator. I plow snow throughout the winter and repair paving stones sidewalks in the summer."

SOME OF THE BEST REASONS TO JOIN US

"The City of Edmonton is an organization with a very diverse workforce that enhances a member's experience and offers a wide range of job opportunities. One can experience as much growth within the organization as one aspires to. The primary factors influencing my decision to accept a position with the City were job security, advancement opportunities, and hours that are beneficial to my home life. The City has shown confidence in me by training me on a variety of equipment and assisted me in upgrading my license to a Class 3."

QUALITIES THAT DEFINE THE CITY AS AN EMPLOYER

"Three qualities that I think best define the City (and my department) as an employer are: Empathetic (when an employee requires assistance or time off for personal reasons the City is willing to accommodate); opportunity for growth and advancement (there are postings for a wide variety of positions almost weekly); and safety-driven (working safely is of utmost importance). The best way I can describe the culture is like being part of a large sports team. Within a team, everyone has a role that he or she must fulfill to ensure the objectives of the team, or in this case, the organization, are met successfully. My experience as a part of this team has been an enjoyable one and I look forward to going to work each day."

WHY EDMONTON IS A GREAT PLACE TO WORK

"The people one interacts with on a daily basis generally are patient, understanding, helpful and are accepting of each individual on a personal level. The City has been very accommodating to my family and I. Recently, I required time off to get married and later assist my wife following the birth of our son. The City very graciously allotted me the time off I required, even though I was still fairly new to the organization, something for which I have been very grateful. I have also been very fortunate to work alongside of some very professional people who have imparted their knowledge, wisdom, and most importantly, their friendship upon me. All of which makes the City of Edmonton a great place to work!"

THE MOST REWARDING PART OF A CAREER HERE

"I find most rewarding the fact that I'm contributing to the working of the 'city machine,' if you will, yet I am still able to maintain a stable family life at home. Using the winter shift as an example, driving a sand/plow truck has been truly the most enjoyable line of work I have performed."
