Hear it Straight From Our Engineers

What is it like to work for the City of Edmonton on a daily basis? We could tell you, but we think our Engineers do a better job.

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO

"As a Research Engineer, my job involves placing, monitoring and evaluating a number of materials that we may use on our roads. Among other responsibilities, I look at asphalt and how it changes over time to determine what materials are most effective."
—Christina Tatarniuk, Research Engineer

"I have been with the City since January of 2009 and truly enjoy my job, which includes taking care of the global modeling of the City of Edmonton's sanitary and combined sewer network. I assess its drainage system performance using various hydrologic and hydraulic models."
—Jingbin Li, Assessment Engineer

"I work as an Engineer in the Waste Management Division, where we work hard to protect the environment and have received ISO certification for our efforts. One of our main goals is to reduce the amount of garbage in our landfills, and I'm very proud of that."
—Jane Ni, Engineer

"I've been here since August of 2006. Our work involves the design and the use of in-house forces for constructing underground services and utilities. Located in the west end of Edmonton away from the downtown core, the Design & Construction section is a little group working on trenchless projects within the City, making the City of Edmonton the only municipality in North America that has their own construction group with trenchless equipment. We like to say, 'We create history with every step that we take,' and I enjoy being a part of that."
—Dinu Philip Alex, Drainage Engineer

"Employed by the City since November of 2007, I work on a wide variety of projects affecting its infrastructure. As a Geotechnical Engineer, my role starts in the conceptual and design stages and extends all the way through to the actual construction of various projects throughout Edmonton."
—Kristen Tappenden, Geotechnical Engineer

"As an Engineering Tech, I support various Engineering groups on different types of projects throughout the City. Everyone treats you with respect and encourages you to move forward and build a great life."
—Vicki Bowness, Engineering Technologist

"I've been with the City for more than two years. I began as a co-op student, and am now a Project Engineer. I am involved in the design and coordination of arterial road projects. I've stayed because I enjoy the people and continue to be challenged."
—Keith Teeuwsen, Project Engineer, Transportation Services

"For more than four years, I've been working with the City of Edmonton. As a Project Engineer in the Neighbourhood Renewal Group of Capital Construction, I am responsible for various Transportation Department projects, from preliminary design to construction. The role is challenging in regards to both project management and technical aspects. Typical project management issues arise with the coordination of utility conflict resolution and communication. Technically, multiple reviews are conducted to identify deficiencies in roadway infrastructure, such as issues caused by mature trees and retro-fitting infrastructure to flat road grades and lot grading."
—Jen Nicholls, Project Engineer, Transportation Services
